This spectacular cliff top off road driving facility was set up in the 1970s by Owen Welford.
Owen worked with major automotive companies such as Land Rover, Mercedes, Jeep and others, delivering off road driver training to thousands of enthusiasts, journalists and motoring professionals all over the UK and around the world, as well as here at Robin Hood's Bay.
Over the decades, Owen developed the site here to be able to demonstrate all aspects of off road driving in a safe and controlled environment, but importantly also with areas which are impossible to drive, in order to ensure drivers understand the limitations of any given vehicle.
The site boasts an impressive variety of terrain and obstacles, much of it natural, but also with some man-made structures to demonstrate particular scenarios to our drivers, and all with a view of the Yorkshire Coast as a spectacular backdrop.
Since the launch of ukLANDROVERevents in 2002, we have had a close connection to North Yorkshire Off Road Centre. This is where we received our own 4x4 training, from Owen himself.
Over the years we have collaberated in many ways, sharing customers between our two businesses, passing work back and forth, and working together on larger events and projects.
We took over providing tuition on the site in 2012, whilst Owen still ran other aspects of the business. More recently, when Owen decided to retire from instructing, we were very fortunate to be offered the opportunity to take over the running of the centre on a permanent basis.
Owen can still often be found on site, for us his knowledge of the land, and of off road driving is invaluable. We are committed to continuing Owen's legacy of providing 'real' driving experiences and training for our visiting drivers here at Robin Hood's Bay.
